This is my journey to become a healthier me. It began on January 26, 2010 and stalled out... I got a type 2 diabetes diagnosis on March 30, 2022 and started to focus on my health again. On November 8, 2022 I added Ozempic to my toolbox to help me shed some pounds and inches!

Out With The Old...

With all the new additions, Nutrisystem is quietly discontinuing a few more items. A few of them surprise me, and I'll definitely be sorry to see them go! I hope we have a few more new ones coming soon to help make up for it.

The list of items they sent out to be discontinued includes the following:

Cheese Tortellini
Chicken Vegetable Stir Fry
Garlic Parmesan Snack A Rounds
Hickory Smoke Flavored Beef Patty
Italian Herb Flatbread Pizza
Salt & Vinegar Snack A Rounds
Stuffed Apple Pie
Whole Grain Soft Pretzel

If any of these are your favourites, I would try to place an order immediately so that you can grab the remaining stock before it's gone!

I have to admit that a few of them surprise me. The Italian Herb Flatbread pizza, I think is far the superior of the two shelf stable pizzas. It looks larger and tastes better than the Thick Crust Pizza, in my opinion. But I'm not the one seeing sales and cost figures, so I am sure Nutrisystem has a better idea of what they are doing.

I'm also surprised to see so many of the savory snacks be removed. While I have a sweet tooth, I know that not everyone does, and the variety of salty items gave more choice to the snack options. Especially the soft pretzel- I thought that was pretty cool and fun to jazz up. I will miss it. I liked the apple pie, too, but fortunately I still have a few of those in the freezer.

I hope that more new items will be added soon to compensate, because that is a lot of items that have been removed lately!

On a Cold Day...

Some entrees that I liked at the beginning have been continually seconded to the back of my cupboard as I find things or methods of preparation that I enjoy more. The Cheese Tortellini has definitely been among those as I've been finding the sauce more bitter than I'm used to in a tomato based dish. It's not bad, just not one of my favourite items.

I was browsing online for soup recipes, since it's been freezing here lately and I miss having a nice big bowl of soup for lunch as comfort food. I saw a recipe that involved tortellini and a bell went off- why couldn't I make a soup using the Cheese Tortellini?

Well, it was pretty darn good! I'm actually still eating it now as I share it with you! If you're looking for a soup recipe to warm you up, definitely give it a try.

Cheese Tortellini (Lunch):

Italian Sausage & Tortellini Soup:

1 pkg Nutrisystem Cheese Tortellini
1 cup low sodium chicken broth
1/2 cup Aylmer Olive Oil & Garlic Diced Tomatoes
1/4 cup frozen chopped spinach
1/4 cup diced onions
1 serving sausage (100 calories or less, 3g fat or less, 7g protein or more)

Prepare the sausage according to package directions- cut into chunks and set aside. In a small pot set to medium heat, combine the broth and Tortellini entree. Simmer until well blended. Add the vegetables and sausage and simmer for 20 minutes on low-medium heat (don't let it boil). Pour into a bowl and if desired, sprinkle with 10 calories' worth of Parmesan cheese.

Count as a lunch entrée, Powerfuel, and 2 servings of veggies.

Tomato Lovers!

We used to eat pasta and things with tomato sauce at least twice a week, which helped contribute to me looking the way I do! It's so easy to overeat on pasta because it's shockingly high in calories, even when you choose whole wheat. The box says a "serving" is over 300 calories, and that's before you add meat, cheese, and whatever else you like! I am looking forward to getting my hands on some Fiber Gourmet pasta, which is lower in calories and carbs than regular pasta. That way I can have a little more flexibility with my pasta meals.

The modifications I made in today's recipes are very simple but they tasted so much better than simply eating the entree alone!

Chili with Beans (Dinner):

OK, who doesn't love a good chili dog? I just heated up the chili like normal in the microwave, and then cooked a veggie dog and placed it in a whole wheat roll. Top with the chili and 1/2 serving of cheese, maybe some onions and whatever else you like on a chili dog, and enjoy! You'll still have chili left over to eat from the bowl as well.

Cheese Tortellini (Lunch):

I saw this modification on the Nutrisystem boards and decided to give it a try because I'm finding that I don't enjoy the Cheese Tortellini nearly as much as I used to. On the limited Canadian menu, it was great. Now I have lots of things to choose from that I enjoy so this has dropped way down my list.

Cheesy Pepperoni Bake
1 pkg NS Cheese Tortellini
1/2 cup no salt added diced tomatoes
1/2 serving turkey pepperoni
1/2 serving shredded cheese
chopped onions and whatever other veggies you like
basil, oregano, garlic, and black pepper to taste

Pour the tomatoes into a glass baking dish and add the tortellini and stir to blend. Add the spices and bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Remove dish from oven, add chopped pepperoni and stir, top with shredded cheese, and bake for another 10 minutes.

This was infinitely better than just eating the tortellini out of the can. It's still not my favourite lunch but now I can find it more palatable.

Lasagna with Meat Sauce (Dinner):

My husband requested I make him lasagna for dinner, and after looking at the pan I made for him the "old way", dripping with meat and cheese and sauce, I decided to try and perk up my sad little tray of lasagna a little bit.

I took a glass baking dish and added 1/4 cup of no salt added tomato sauce (counts as a veggie serving without the sodium), and chopped up onions, mushrooms, and bell peppers. I topped the veggies with 1 tbsp low fat ricotta cheese (free food). I opened the lasagna and chopped it up, and put half on top. I then added 1/4 cup fat free cottage cheese (1/2 protein) and spread it around. I added the remaining lasagna pieces and sauce from the tray and topped with 1/2 oz shredded mozzerella cheese (1/2 protein).

It was SO filling and while it didn't have that heavy pasta taste that I do still miss, I really enjoyed it and I'm so stuffed that I couldn't eat another bite. It was definitely an improvement on just heating the little tray!

Some Meal Tips

While I enjoy most of the Nutrisystem meals just as-is, there's no reason why I shouldn't make them even better if I have time to do so! I got these recipe ideas from the Nutrisystem.com message boards.

Although I enjoy the Nutrisystem pasta, I do miss a rich, cheesy sauce. It was suggested to me that I put a 1/2 cup scoop of fat free cottage cheese in a bowl and dump my lunch pasta (Pasta with Beef or Cheese Tortellini) over the top, and then microwave it. You can also add veggies like onions, mushrooms, bell peppers- whatever you like in your pasta dishes. It was really yummy! And I was very full after eating my lunch- the extra protein really helped.

The second modification was fantastic! Take one of the breakfast scones (either apple or chocolate chip), and cut it in half to make two thin squares of bread. Beat an egg with a dash of milk and maybe some cinnamon, and dip the bread in the egg to make French toast! Cook in a pan until golden brown and serve with sugarfree syrup.

This was absolutely an amazing breakfast. Dan tried to take it away from me and eat it himself! You could also use fruit to make your syrup which would use all your breakfast portions, or save it to eat later. I will definitely be eating this again in the future!

Woohoo!

I lost 4 pounds this week! Way to get some positive reinforcement that I am doing the right thing! It's been so nice to eat things I'm enjoying and still lose weight.

Today was a pretty yummy day. It's hard to beat pasta and sweet stuff! I wish the free week they sent me didn't include so many salty snacks because I don't really want them. Oh well... I can at least try them.

For breakfast, I had the Apple Strudel Scone. This was the first thing I tried out of my Nutrisystem box the day it came and I still think it's really good. It's dense and apple-y.

I felt like comfort food for lunch, so I chose the Cheese Tortellini. The serving size was adequate and I enjoyed the pasta. It was nothing special but nothing shabby either. Pretty basic pasta dish.

I had some green beans in the fridge that I wanted to make, and since I like cheesy things with green beans, I decided to make the Macaroni & Cheese. I was impressed at how cheesy it was! It reminded me of Kraft dinner but with a thicker sauce.

For dessert, I chose the Double Chocolate Almond Cookie. I almost forgot to take a picture again since I was ready to dig in! It's rich and chocolatey and has a generous serving of nuts.

It's nice to be off to a fast start- not quite a week and four pounds. I know the weight loss will slow down after the first few weeks but it helps to keep me motivated!
