This is my journey to become a healthier me. It began on January 26, 2010 and stalled out... I got a type 2 diabetes diagnosis on March 30, 2022 and started to focus on my health again. On November 8, 2022 I added Ozempic to my toolbox to help me shed some pounds and inches!

Week 90 Weigh In

So I forgot to write last week that I had planned to increase my dose just slightly, to 0.85mg. I didn't want to make the jump to 1mg for multiple reasons. First of all, a jump always runs the risk of unpleasant side effects. I've worked my way up slowly every time I increased my dose, and I think it's for the best because I tend to have minimal side effects. Secondly, I know that because my A1C is under control (yay!) that I won't get a prescription increase over 1mg so I want to save that last jump for when I'm much closer to goal and need the boost.

I did find that I have experienced some side effects this week but whether it's from the dose increase or just general distress from grief, I'm not sure. I've been generally not feeling well since the death in my family, and I find that when I'm under stress, the range of food that I can eat narrows dramatically. Everything tastes "spicy" to me and then I can't stomach it unless it's very bland, and since most bland food winds up being simple carbs, it's not ideal for the macros I generally aim for with at least 100g of protein daily. I don't eat low carb, but I do eat low glycemic carb, so I try to stay away from things like crackers, white bread, and potatoes- which are exactly the kinds of things my stomach wants when I'm stressed. The nausea and bloat/discomfort I'm feeling might be typical Ozempic effects but they're also typical grief and stress effects, too. Either way, it doesn't matter. I just have to keep putting one foot in front of the other. All I can really handle in life right now is one day at a time, so this is just yet another reminder to do that.

Overall, I think I've done fairly well with my eating habits and I did make it to the gym 6 days last week for the trials sessions, and there are more this week as well. I'm hoping to go 5 days this week but we'll see how it goes. I didn't score very well in the trials but that's OK. I don't have high expectations of myself right now. Just showing up and being present for them is enough to be proud of.

And the weight is starting to drop off again, at least a little bit. I guess it'll be a while to get back to where I was before, but there isn't much I can do about that. I can't give up because I still have my HealthyWager on the line and I really need to win that $1341 USD!

Week 71 Weigh in & 45 Strong Challenge Day 15

So, we're back to the ping pong ball a bit. In the last 4 weeks I've lost a whole 0.2 lbs, which is a wee bit less than I'd been hoping for. That being said, I can see that I have visibly gained muscle, so there is obviously some body recomposition going on. Would I rather be down a few pounds and not see those changes? I mean honestly no. So I'll have to tolerate the frustration of the scale not moving while things sort themselves out a bit.

I'm just rereading that and want to give myself a bit of a smack. I mean, I am down 2.4 lbs this week. It might feel a bit artificial since the jump last week came out of the blue so I guess it really feels to me like the last three weeks netted out to nothing, but it could be that things are finally moving again. Either way? I should try to be less whiny when there is a good size drop, no matter what it feels like.

I'm just tired and having some mental health struggles unrelated to my health or this challenge. On the plus side? I don't feel like giving up because I'm struggling. I feel like this is the one thing I am doing for my self care lately, and that if I gave up I'd feel much worse. Once today is in the books I'll be a third of the way through the challenge and I haven't missed a day yet. This is a time limited challenge and it's not measured by outcomes- it's simply measured by doing it. It won't matter what the scale says, or how much I've improved or not improved fitness-wise; all I have to do is to keep trying and I'll have succeeded. That's really empowering! I don't have to rely on my body not being fickle. As long as I get out there, I'll be a winner. So I'm going to keep going and doing my best!

Speaking of being a winner, I signed up for a FREE HealthyWage $10,000 weight loss challenge. It started yesterday, but people can keep joining if they missed the first day- you just have a little less time on your challenge. It doesn't cost anything to sign up but if you are successful you will win money! They divide the prize pool by the number of winners. It won't be a lot of money but free money is a good thing! In this case, you have to lose 4% of your starting weight by April 25. Feel free to join me- it costs absolutely nothing if you don't succeed and if you win- well, you're down the weight and a few dollars richer!

I think I dislike the cardio at F45 because the intensity is much higher than what I've been doing with Walk at Home, and my stamina just isn't there yet. I feel my body complaining about not getting those breaks like we do with the weights, but I mean I would do 45-60 min of a Walk at Home video without taking breaks at all. The intensity and the constant shifting and the fact that some of these exercises are challenging for me to do at all means that I feel like I'm struggling, and there's no clear marker of improvement like there is with the lifting weights.

That being said- it's on the program, I've paid for that monthly pass, so I'm doing it, whether it's fun or not. I'm working on reminding myself that even if I hate it while I'm doing it, I do like how my body feels afterwards. If that's the win, I'll take it. Look for small victories where you can.

I did:

  • 64 minutes of walking and 38 minutes at F45 for a total of 102 active minutes. Today was the Loyals workout which is some not fun cardio.
  • drank 3 litres of water
  • did my dental care!
  • 22 minutes of Spanish on Duolingo.

45 Strong Challenge: Day 2

Well, I survived day two!

I did:

  • 20 minutes of walking plus 40 minutes at the gym for a total of 60 active minutes. Today was the Titans workout at F45 which is strength training. Hey, bare minimum is still reaching goal!
  • drank 3.5 litres of water!
  • did my dental care!
  • 19 minutes of Spanish on Duolingo. I learned a bunch of new words that I think will need some practicing.
I have to admit that I'm really hoping that this challenge helps the scale start moving a little more consistently again. I know that gaining muscle can slow down weight loss temporarily, but it boosts your metabolic rate and so it ups your fat burning in future weeks, and that works for me!

I'm currently in a free HealthyWage challenge and I might not quite make it because my loss rate has slowed so much over the past few months- this isn't my wager where I have bet on myself, just a free challenge that anyone could sign up for. You don't win much if you do, but what do you expect for a free challenge, right? And I figure any financial reward is a good reward.

Since today is a weights training day, I focused on choosing higher protein meals as well. I've read that pushing the protein percentage up to 40% of total daily calories definitely helps with muscle building and weight loss, but I have trouble getting it much past 30%. Usually I have relatively balanced macros and that has worked well so far. Since I'm picky about meats, raising my protein intake that high is difficult without dropping my carbs low enough that I start to feel deprived, so I'm just doing the best I can.

Breakfast today was an open faced toasted whole wheat english muffin, each side topped with two slices of deli ham, half a slice of smoked cheddar, a little diced red onion, and an egg served sunny side up with a runny yolk. Super filling and the low glycemic carbs along with the protein will give me energy for my workout! 399 calories, 18.5g fat, 27g carbs, 33g protein.

Lunch was a new recipe!

Miso-Soy Shrimp Bowl:

285g of raw shrimp, peeled and deveined
170g shredded cabbage/carrot blend
1 medium onion, diced
1 sweet pepper, diced
1 tbsp miso broth concentrate
1 tbsp cornstarch
1/2 tbsp dried sesame seeds
1/2 tbsp sesame oil
1 cup cooked jasmine rice
1 green onion, chopped
1 tbsp minced garlic
2 tbsp soy sauce

Heat a large dry pan over medium heat, and toast the sesame seeds until golden brown, 2-4 minutes, stirring frequently. Do not burn! Put them in a small bowl and set aside.
Pat shrimp dry and put into a bowl. Sprinkle with 1/2 the cornstarch and shake until they are coated. In another small bowl, add miso concentrate, soy sauce, the remaining cornstarch, 1/2 the garlic, and 1/2 cup water and whisk to combine.
In the same pan, heat 1/2 the sesame oil and then add the onion, and peppers. Cover and cook for 5 minutes or until tender-crisp. Add the cabbage mix and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Transfer cooked veggies to a bowl and cover to keep them warm.
In the same pan, heat remaining sesame oil and then add shrimp, pan frying until shrimp turn pink and are fully cooked, 3-4 minutes. Add sauce mixture to the pan, and stir until sauce thickens, 1-2 minutes.
Portion the rice into two dishes and top each with half the veggies, the shrimp and sauce, and green onions. Sprinkle with sesame seeds as a garnish.

If you're more of a fan of savoury/umami flavours then sweet, this is a great modification for a teriyaki shrimp stir fry! And without the sugar, it's definitely a smaller hit to your calorie budget. You can substitute brown rice or riced cauliflower if you like, but this will change the calorie count. As prepared, each serving contains 282 calories, 4.5g fat, 33g carbs, and 23.5g protein.

Afternoon Snack was 1/2 cup of chopped strawberries topped with Oikos maple syrup flavour Greek yogurt, with a little drizzle of sugarfree caramel syrup. Sweet and delicious! 113 calories, 1.5g fat, 16.5g carbs, 8.5g protein.

Dinner was another new recipe to share with you all!

Lightened Up Cottage Pie:

1/3 lb lean ground beef
200g raw russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
1/3 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1.5 tbsp tomato paste
1/3 lb mirepoix (finely chopped onions, celery, and carrots)
100g diced cremini mushrooms
2 tsp unsalted butter
1 tsp cream cheese
200g cauliflower florets, chopped
1 tsp garlic salt
1 tbsp beef stock concentrate

Preheat your oven to 450 degrees. Boil a large pot of water, and add the potatoes and cauliflower. Cook for 12-14 minutes, or until fork tender. Drain the pot, saving a little of the starchy water. Add the butter, garlic salt, and cream cheese, and mash the potatoes and cauliflower until they reach your desired mashed texture. If necessary, use a little of the starchy water to loosen them up a bit.
In a large pan, cook the ground beef, mushrooms, and mirepoix for 3-6 minutes, or until veggies are tender and beef is no longer pink. Carefully drain any remaining beef fat.
Add tomato paste, and cook for about 1 minute or until fragrant. Add 1/2 cup water and the beef stock concentrate and bring to a simmer over high. Once simmering, reduce heat to medium low and cook for another 2-3 minutes or until sauce thickens.
Transfer filling to an 8x8 baking dish and then cover evenly with the mashed potato mixture. Top with the shredded cheese and bake for 8-10 minutes or until golden and cheese is melted.

Serves two generous portions at 425 calories, 24g fat, 30g carbs, and 23g protein. You can alter the nutritional content by swapping out potatoes entirely for cauliflower, using your favourite butter replacement, and using ground turkey instead of beef (then use chicken concentrate instead!) but I think this is pretty reasonable as it is, and tastes rich and filling. It also reheats well, so you can make a big batch and enjoy the leftovers on another day.

Dessert was a savory snack plate today since I was trying to focus on protein!

I love little charcuterie plates! This is 1 oz of smoked gouda cheese, 1 oz Brie, 1 slice of prosciutto, and 1/4 cup of grapes. The crackers are amazing- they are PC Black Label cranberry & fennel artisan crisps, and I would definitely recommend them with some nice cheese. Dessert was 360 calories, 23g fat, 19.5g carbs, and 19g protein.

That brings me to a total of 1578 calories, 71.5g fat, 126g carbs, and 107g protein. It's been a pretty good day, although I was sweating like crazy today! I guess it's a good thing I upped my water intake- or maybe I'm sweating more because I'm drinking more? Unsure. But I'm very happy to be putting another star on my chart at the gym for the challenge! Whoever thought stickers were silly... it's a nice visual representation of what I'm accomplishing!

Week 58 Weigh In!

Well, at least it looks like being consistent is working for me again! I have tried very hard to get my exercise in and stay in a reasonable calorie deficit this week and it's nice to see some results! I'll enjoy it for now since I know that doesn't always have a direct payoff.

Not to mention this week has all the holiday events, and I plan to enjoy myself in moderation. After all, balance isn't about deprivation. It's simply making sure to get right back on track after an occasional indulgence.

I have had a hard time lately getting back on track, so I have to commit to focusing this time. To that end, I signed up for the (totally free) $5,000 HealthyWage Jackpot Challenge. Unlike when you make a wager to lose weight, for this challenge HealthyWage puts up a $5,000 pot and anyone can sign up for it. However many people achieve their weight loss will split that prize pool. Is it going to be a lot? No, but it might be more than usual around the holidays, and free money is free money! The challenge starts today and goes until March 11. Feel free to join me! It's a great way to try out HealthyWage without having to spend any of your own money.

I do have a very busy week ahead since I'm hosting Christmas this year, but if I have time I'll try to share some healthy appetizer recipes for events that I have found everyone likes, whether they're trying to cut calories or not.

Hope you all have a very happy holiday season, whatever you are celebrating!

Week 53 Weigh In!

I noticed the past week that I was just not feeling disciplined, and after 8 months of doing my absolute best to exercise and stay within my calories so that I'd win my wager, I was okay with not going hog wild, but by just not really worrying about food and having what I wanted when I was hungry. So, no surprises that I have a little bit of a gain this week. That being said, I feel like I was mindful about my choices, I didn't binge, and I'm feeling good about getting focused again, so I think it was just fine to indulge a little bit.

And after playing with the Healthy Wager settings for a while, I decided to make a second wager after all! I was trying to make another conservative wager so I'd feel confident about it, but the payout ROI was much lower than it was on my first wager, so I guess the HealthyWage staff have faith in me! I found that the payouts didn't start to go past 100% unless I said I'd lose at least 35lbs and since I'm getting smaller and closer to my goal weight, that made me a bit nervous since I'd be approaching my goal weight and I know it's normal to hit longer plateaus at that point.

But since I am placing my new wager within 2 weeks of winning my last bet, they are letting me use my weigh-out verified weight for my new wager- and I made that one in the evening after eating dinner and drinking some water, so I'm already down a few pounds from there! So I figured that would give me a little bit of a boost. So here we go again- I have wagered $35 per month that I will lose 40lbs in 18 months, which is about half a pound a week. I'm hoping that I'll be able to average that, but it's a long timespan so we will see how it goes!

If you're thinking of making some money while you lose the weight you were going to lose anyway, you can get an extra $40 free on your wager payout by using my referral link!! Put it towards some nice new clothes that fit!

I am also still exercising at home with my Leslie Sansone Walk at Home subscription, but I decided to go along with this new wager that I'd give myself a little bit of a kickstart. I saw an ad on my Facebook page for an F45 gym that is within walking distance, and they were offering a pass for 10 workouts in 14 days for $29. I'll be honest, I have absolutely no idea what F45 is so I might have bitten off more than I can chew, but I decided that I would give it a try. Something to shake it up a bit in my gym routine so that my body doesn't get acclimatized. And maybe it will help boost my muscle development so that it becomes easier for me to lose more fat. 10 workouts in 14 days is a pretty crazy schedule but it's only for 2 weeks so I am going to give it a try. I'll be updating here how it goes!

Losing to Win!

I did it, everyone! I bet $50 per month for 8 months that I would lose 30lbs. I figured that was pretty much a sure bet- since it's less than a pound per week. I'm definitely glad I gave myself some extra space because when I got sick and couldn't work out, my weight loss slowed right down. But I still made it with room to spare and I'm excited to collect my winnings!!! I win $1141!!!

I think I'll be putting this money away to spend on new clothes once I reach my maintenance phase. I still have some weight that I'd like to lose so for now I'm going to stick with cheap options like thrift stores and Marketplace so that I can wear clothes that fit and aren't too baggy, but also not a waste of money since hopefully I won't be in them for too long.

Definitely considering making another wager, although I have to take into account that my loss rate has significantly slowed since I have much less weight to lose.

If you haven't tried HealthyWage out, I'd definitely recommend them. You are absolutely allowed to take any medications you have been prescribed, including Ozempic and other GLP-1s. And if you sign up for your wager through my referral link, you'll get an extra $40 on your prize!

It really is a nice extra bonus to get paid to lose weight, and if you're paying for your Ozempic out of pocket, you can even use your wager as a way to fund the meds! Just play around with the prize calculator until you get a payout you are happy with. The minimum timespan is 6 months (no crash diets!) and the minimum amount of weight you have to lose is 10% of your starting weight. The minimum bet is $200 (total over the timespan, not per month!). Beyond that- you can play around with it and make longer timeframes, lose more weight or bet more money- the choice is yours to make it work best for you.

My best recommendation is to give yourself some wiggle room because bodies can be a little unpredictable. They do allow you to extend your wager if you're close but not quite there, but it's better not to need that safety net! Healthy weight loss is 1-2lbs per week, so I would definitely take that into account even if you think you can lose faster. Some weeks I did, but on average, I wouldn't have been able to sustain that.

But if you're already working hard and losing weight... why not get paid for it, too? It's a pretty exciting feeling to add to the excitement of losing! And something to remember when we have those moments where we want to backslide a bit. Just a little bit of extra motivation!

Week 43 Weigh In!

Well, restarting has been interesting. I was curious to see how it was going to affect me since I've read about a variety of other results ranging from it no longer worked to being back to ground zero.

I did choose to restart at 0.25mg because I didn't want to deal with side effects, and so far going slowly has worked really well for me. The first day, I noticed that I was definitely feeling the shot and that I wanted to eat smaller portions again. No hard stop from the first time around, but after 9 months it should be more of a matter of discipline now.

The second day, I noticed that I was getting very intense hunger pangs- more so than I did when I wasn't taking the Ozempic. While eating a small amount helped, I was surprised at how strong the need to eat was. At one point I was trying to go to sleep and I was so hungry I couldn't get comfortable, so I finally had to get up and get a small piece of cheese and then I could sleep. I am not in the habit of eating once I've gone to bed because I don't think it's ideal, but I felt like I had no options if I actually wanted to sleep. Thankfully, it did work!

As the week went on, my body started to normalize again. As long as I follow my usual routine of eating small portions often, I'm doing just fine. If I do forget to eat, my stomach quickly gets more insistent! But it's still satisfied by the smaller amounts so there's no need to overeat.

Also, I did get my cycle this week so I wouldn't be surprised if that has had an effect on my increased hunger. Hormones suck. I did notice over the past nine months that I tended to have higher calories the week of my period so that's fairly normal for me.

That being said, I don't think I'm going to stay at 0.25mg for long this time around. I think I'm going to go back to my plan of ramping up slowly again so I can get back to my normal dose of 0.50mg. Hopefully that will continue to work well and I can stay there for a while.

Even with the slower weight loss the past two months, as of this week I have officially surpassed my HealthyWage weight loss goal! Even if I don't lose another pound between now and Halloween, I will win $1142!!! I am really looking forward to placing another bet once I get paid for this one because it feels like free money- and I really could use some new clothes in a smaller size! Set a reasonable goal- I think for most people, one pound per week is very achievable (and it really adds up over time!), decide how much you'd like to bet and how long you'd like your bet to last (I did 30lbs over 8 months), and you can count your found money at the end of it! If you make a bet through my referral link, you'll get an extra $40 added to your winnings!

I'm still having trouble with energy and exercising, and this is not related to the Ozempic. I'm still just burned out and exhausted from spending a month mostly in bed. All my fitness tracker apps are warning me not to overdo it and when I tried to do even a half hour, I got warnings that I had exceeded my current fitness level and wound up spending the next day in bed. So, I really am starting from zero again with the exercise, which sucks because I have been working so hard since January. But, as I've said before, that's life. Things happen to derail us. We've just got to pick ourselves up and keep going. I built up my fitness level before, and I'll do it again, as long as I don't give up. The most important step isn't the first or the last- it's the next one.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is!

Well, after thinking about it for a few days, I decided to sign up for HealthyWage, a website that pays you when you accomplish your weight loss goals. I did the research- it's been around for a while, so it's legit, and has a great rating on the BBB.

I still felt reluctant to sign up though, and I'm not completely sure why. It does feel a little sad that the money they are paying out is coming from people who do not actually accomplish their weight loss, but bookies will bet on anything, after all. I read that about a third of people who sign up reach their weight loss goals.

They caught my attention by offering a free to sign up $5000 Jackpot starting April 1, where you can sign up for free and as long as you lose 6% of your body weight by June 24, you share the prize pot with the other winners. No cost whatsoever. I was thinking, OK, I'd try that and see how it goes. So I created an account and downloaded the app, although I can't weigh in or do much of anything until the start date when you have to verify your weight.

That seems relatively straightforward- you can either have someone record a video of you weighing in, with a few caveats to reduce the risk of cheating, use their app, or you can have your doctor or a Weight Watchers meeting or a few different places verify your weight. You have to do that again at the end of the challenge, too. And if you succeed? They pay out with your choice of a cheque or Paypal.

As I said, my intention was only to sign up for the free challenge, but of course, you gotta love targeted advertising- they kept sending me various ads to try and get me to sign up for the challenge where you bet on yourself to lose weight. And they did manage to get my attention when they offered me a free six month subscription to the Jillian Michaels workout app.

If you've been reading my blog for a while, you'll know I started out doing Jillian's program back in 2010. I used to watch the Biggest Loser, and while I still don't love the idea of commodifying and humiliating people who are trying to get healthy, nor do I think weight loss that rapid is a good idea, I have to admit that she got and still gets results. I have been mixing her exercise videos in along with my Leslie Sansone Walk at Home, and Jillian's are definitely intense!

So, I did ultimately decide to make a weight loss bet. I will have 8 months to lose 30lbs, and if I win, they will pay me $1101.42! That's less than a pound a week, so I think if I continue with my current exercise regimen and eat at a calorie deficit, that I should have no problem reaching that goal. I wish I'd signed up 18 weeks ago since I'm already down more than 35lbs! That would have been a shoo-in!

Losing weight can be expensive... why not get yourself a little reward so you can splurge on new clothes? If you sign up through my HealthyWage link, you'll get an extra $40 cash on your payout when you achieve your weight loss goal! Also, it would be great to have regular check-ins with people who are doing the same thing!

So let's do this together!
